‘All this over a woman?’ Passengers frustrated over delays

Flights at Larnaca airport were delayed on Tuesday with some incoming and outgoing being diverted to Paphos as the hijacked Egyptair flight effectively shut the airport.

Hundreds of people were left stranded as they waited for more information.

One man, Louis Loizou in his early 60s was set to fly to Berlin in the morning however delays now mean he will miss his medical appointment.

“I just got an email from easyJet my flight will be at 3pm from Larnaca airport. But my appointment was at 12:45pm,” he said.

Maria Kallas scheduled for the same flight said “it’s a series of things I’m missing. I had prepaid train tickets that I’ll now miss. I’m going to be stranded there now.”

One woman who wished to remain unnamed set to fly to Thessaloniki was incredibly frustrated. “Honestly this happened over a woman? I’m going to jab her eyes out.”

Nevertheless while security was definitely visible at the airport with armed police and army offices in and out of the premises, passengers were relatively calm.

“What will happen will happen,” Demetra Vasilopoulou said. “I would like to sit down somewhere because my back hurts but it’s ok what can we do?”.

Vasilopoulou and her husband were set to fly to Athens via Emirates airlines.

“The flight from Dubai didn’t stop here though. It went on directly to Athens. I guess they didn’t want to put their passengers at risk.”

More details on passengers and flights are set to be made public shortly at a press conference.

Hermes airports said eight flights set to land in Larnaca were diverted to Paphos airport so far.

The practicality of this however remains to be seen as Paphos airport already has problems with accommodating large numbers of flights and passengers
