Iran election: Moderates poised to make gains in high-stakes vote

Image
Preliminary results in Iran's first major election since last year's landmark nuclear deal show moderates making a strong showing in a high-stakes ballot that could shape the future of the country and its relationship with the West. Voters cast ballots Friday for members for parliament as well as a powerful clerical body -- the Assembly of Experts, the committee of clerics that chooses the Islamic Republic's supreme leader. Iran's Interior Ministry said Saturday that with about one-third of the votes counted in Tehran, reformers were leading the parliamentary elections. Results from outside Tehran also indicated a strong showing by moderate candidates. In one significant result, former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and President Hassan Rouhani, both reformists, were in the top two spots for the Assembly of Experts in Tehran as of Saturday afternoon. Rafsanjani called for national unity following the divisive vote, according to Iran's state-run news agency, IRN...

Necklace aids child vaccination

Image
Guddia's Khushi Baby pendant contains all her vaccination records Around 1.5 million children die around the world every year from diseases that could be prevented through vaccination. India has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the world at under 60% - well below the World Health Organization's 90% target. But in rural Rajasthan, a simple necklace - which contains a child's vaccination records in a computer chip - is helping boost the numbers protected. Khushi Baby - which means happy baby - is a plastic pendant on a black string. A computer chip embedded in the pendant stores vaccination data of the baby wearing it, along with the mother's health records. By keeping the information on the child rather than on medical cards which can be lost or on paper logbooks that can become cumbersome and are almost impossible to search through, health workers can ensure babies get the right vaccinations at the right time. Eight-month-old Guddia Damur with her mother Ba...

Murthal gangrapes: Eyewitnesses come forward, probe committee formed

Image
A couple of days after reports of gangrapes in Murthal surfaced, three truck drivers who claim to be the eyewitnesses have said that they saw women being dragged and molested by Jat agitators in Murthal. This comes even as a team of women police officers visited the site today and said that no eyewitness or victim turned up to present any testimony. The three men Sukhwinder Singh, Niranjan and Naresh Kumar claimed that the agitators torched their trucks in Murthal, which is around 50 km from the National capital and then assaulted them following which they hid in the bushes to save themselves. They also alleged that they witnessed attackers "dragging women out of vehicles, tearing their clothes and molesting them" before carrying them towards the fields. In a rather shocking revelation Singh further said that "policemen who were present in plain clothes" were pressurising them to remain silent about the incident. The Haryana Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Po...

2nd former Mexican president unloads on Donald Trump

Image
Felipe Calderon Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Saturday joined his predecessor in office in unloading on Donald Trump, calling the Republican front-runner's campaign racist and saying his discourse on immigration is fueling anti-American sentiment around the world. Calderon, a conservative who was president of Mexico from 2006 to 2012, even said he thought Trump was trying to exploit the same social feelings and resentments as did Adolf Hitler. "I think his logic of exalting white supremacy isn't even acting against immigration — Donald Trump is the descendant of migrants — it is acting and speaking against immigrants who have a different skin color than him, which is frankly racist and is a bit like the exploitation of sensitive fibers that Hitler did in his day," Calderon told reporters after a meeting of the National Action Party, or PAN, in Mexico City. Calderon's comments parallel those made earlier by former President Vicente Fox, who prece...

China's island militarization worries neighbors

Image
Foreign ministers from the 10 countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations said Saturday that they were "seriously concerned" by recent developments in the disputed South China Sea region and will seek a meeting over the issue with China. At the end of their annual retreat, held this year in the Laos capital of Vientiane, they noted their worries and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace, security and stability in the area. The strategically important South China Sea is at the center of a territorial dispute involving China on one side and a number of ASEAN countries on the other, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia. Tensions have ramped up since China began a massive land reclamation program in 2013. Recent satellite imagery suggests that China has installed surface-to-air missiles in a disputed area in the Paracels chain, prompting accusations that Beijing is militarizing the area. A joint statement said the ASEAN foreign ministers ...

So far only Norway and Russia are exercising this right, with the Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol coal mining on the islands. There are no roads connecting the settlements ...

Six in ten voters casting their ballots in South Carolina’s primary election were black, AP reported, citing preliminary exit polls. The previous record for black voter turnout in the state was 55 percent in 2008. Clinton and Sanders had different approaches going into the primary, with Clinton more focused on this particular win, while Sanders took a broader outlook and focused on the March 1 races, giving a speech to about 10,000 people at a Formula One racetrack near Austin, Texas ...

But in a characteristic gibe at Western countries, he said Zimbabwe would not accept aid if it came with conditions that the country should accept gay rights. “If aid, as I undesterand, is to be given on the basis that we accept the principle of gay marriages, then let that aid stay were it is,” Mugabe said during an hour-long speech. “We don’t want it. It is rotten aid, filthy aid ...
